Description

What is a wedding cheese cake?

Wedding cakes are tiers of whole cheeses in usually 3 or 5 tiers. They are good value and can serve up to 200 people. They make a great alternative to a traditional wedding cake and are always a talking point at any wedding.

The layered cheeses can be decorated with fruit, flowers, figures etc. to complement your wedding theme and are often used as the main wedding cake and served after the main meal as another course. The remaining cheese can then be added to the buffet table in the evening.

Alternatively you may want fewer tiers for a second cake to be used in the evening and still have your traditional fruit wedding caked in the day.

These cakes are also great for any special occasion or party.

How do I know how much cheese I will need?

We normally recommend 100-150g of cheese per person at an average cost of around £2.00 per head. Our staff are always on hand to answer any questions you may have so just call the shop if you have any questions.

Does the shop decorate the cake?

No. The cheeses are wrapped individually and either collected by the customer or posted out to the venue hosting the wedding or party for you to decorate as you wish. Every person has their own individual taste and style and we leave it to your own creativity!

Can you supply accompaniments to the cheese?

Yes we have an extensive range of chutneys, pickles and biscuits to accompany your cheese selection and we can advise on which would work well with the cheeses you have chosen.

Are the wedding cakes available all year round?

Yes, although we are very busy in December and wouldn’t be able to see you in the shop to discuss your cake. If you need a cake during the month of December we would recommend visiting the shop a few months in advance and ordering your cake early for a December collection or delivery on a specified day.

MORE ABOUT US:

Our company is called "The Hartington Cheese & Wine Company Ltd" and we trade under the name of The Old Cheese Shop.

We are a small, but extremely popular and busy, retail outlet located in the village of Hartington (next to the duck pond).

Our main business is the selling of approximately 80 cheeses from around the UK in our well stocked chilled counter, many of which are made locally.

We also stock a vast array of chutneys, cheese biscuits, English wines and local beers.

The chutneys and biscuits are all made locally for us either in Leek or Ashbourne and the beers are all brewed within a 20 mile radius of the shop.

We offer a delivery service to trade customers and have just opened an online shop to the public.

During the month of December we offer late night opening times to our customers to avoid the queues!

We can supply wedding cheese cakes, hampers, cheese boards and welcome baskets for holiday lets. Ring the shop for more information on 01298 84935.

Hartington and Stilton Cheese - Hartington is famous for its cheese.

Cheese has been synonymous with Hartington and it is famous for Stilton production. Cheese has been made in Hartington for over a hundred years and the Cheese Shop itself has been open for at least 25 years. The creamery in Hartington was first established by the Duke of Devonshire in the 1870's, and produced the white crumbly Derbyshire cheese until it was partially destroyed by fire in 1894. After standing empty for six years it was taken over and reinstated in 1900 by Thomas Nuttall, a prize-winning Stilton cheese-maker from Melton Mowbray, who began producing Blue Stilton at Hartington, a business which was later carried on and expanded by his son, John M. Nuttall. It was John Nuttall who held a warrant to supply Stilton to King George V, and also during the 1920’s a far-sighted regulation – a Certification Trade Mark – confined the legal production of Blue Stilton to the three neighbouring counties of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Our aim is to stock British produce and the more local the better! We have very strong ties now to a number of producers from the local area and not surprisingly their cheeses are the most popular with our customers but we are always on the look out for new cheeses. We now also stock Sean Wilsons cheeses (ex coronation street star who played Martin Platt).

We are 2 young local couples - Claire and Garry Millner from Reapsmoor, nr Longnor who have 2 young children, live on a smallholding and own a childrens day nursery in Chapel-en-le-Frith called Cheeky Monkeys and Helen and Jason Kidd who live on a farm in Longnor. They have a beef herd and also own an Animal Feed Business called All Seasons. They too have 2 young children.

Cheese is a much loved food and it has been amazing how many long discussions we have had with our customers about their "likes and dislikes". We have met some great people and know that as long as we stock the right cheeses, offer good customer service and promote ourselves widely we can ensure the business remains a focal point of the village.

Our motto is most definitely "Source local where possible, serve with a smile and establish a good reputation"

During the summer months the shop is open 7 days a week from 9am until 6pm. We remain open 7 days a week throughout the winter months but as soon as the clocks go back we close at 5pm.

Order on Line and we will Deliver:

Our normal delivery time will be within 3 to 4 working days from time of order.

However we can offer a next day delivery but the postal charges may be higher if it is to be delivered on a weekend. Please ring the shop for a quote.

Different despatch dates apply just before Christmas and over the Christmas holiday period. We recommend you book early and place any order for a special occasion to avoid disappointment caused by late deliveries

Therefore, if your order is especially date sensitive, please bear this in mind as we cannot be responsible for late deliveries due to circumstances beyond our control. December deliveries often take longer than one day as all courier companies struggle to cope. We would always advise customers to allow an extra day for delivery if your order is for a special occasion such as a wedding or party or book delivery date well in advance.

If you need to contact us, please email us at enquiry@hartingtoncheeseshop.co.uk, or ring us on 01298 84935 during the hours of 9 am until 5pm Monday to Sunday.
